For centuries the south-western part of Asia was filled with an array of small kingdoms that remained under the reign of powerful China. Today's Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand share their cultural roots that have their basis in common history, religion and similar social conditions. Despite the existence of borders, the countries of Indochina are inhabited to a great extent by the same ethnic groups that have matured culturally in similar economic and political circumstances. The ancient and modern history have linked the inhabitants of the region into a cultural unity.
